Urban Music Festival: Pretty Okafor leads PMAN on to new frontiers
The Pretty Okafor led Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN) is breaking free from a yoke of stagnation and forging ahead to create sustainable developmental initiatives for music and musicians in the country. This he reaffirmed by staging a world class unity concert at Freedom Park, Lagos, on October 1st.
What better day and venue? Freedom Park is a certified tourist attraction, it is the old colonial prison, where many Nigerian political prisoners were kept, although a lot of renovation has been done, to preserve the history, the prison cells and blocks remain the same, and now houses relaxation spots, art & craft shops, and a gallery by Noble Laureate- Prof. Wole Shoyinka.
What a nice choice of venue by the current PMAN administration, which has since received commendation and partnership from Lagos State Government through the Ministry of Tourism, Arts & Culture, for it's initiative to reposition music as a tool for social development. Also enjoying support from companies like Indomie, Techno, Calypso, Easy Taxi, Deus Wine, amongst others.
On October 1st, as Nigerians at home and abroad celebrate 55 years of independence, Freedom Park was lighted and filled up like never before, for the maiden edition of Urban Music Festival. The three stages within the premises were maximized; Stage 1 had the Live Band performing with music legends, Stage 2 hosted top notch DJs and performances by promising talents in music and dance, while Stage 3 was dedicated to the Reggae lovers.
Pioneer rock musician- Fadabasi of 'Abasi Mmi Ayaiyah' fame kicked off the Live Band Session on Stage 1, followed by afro beat legend Dede Mabiaku, thereafter, music icons and pop stars took turns to perform, amongst whome were Ras Kimono, Stella Monye, Sound Sultan, Baba Dee, Vector, Mode 9, Joe El, Sleek, Adewale Ayuba, Jazz Man Olofin, Sir Shina Peters, Blacky, Sunny Nneji.
'The Urban Music Festival will be bigger and better next year', Festival Director-Baba Dee promised, while calling on the executive to take a bow at the close of the concert, after PMAN Vice President- Sunny Nneji's superlative performance. The National President, Pretty Okafor, in his remark, appreciated the hard work of the festival committee, and the fans who turned out in their numbers to witness the grand outing, and called on musicians from all genres across the country to join hands with the 'New PMAN' to build a formidable music industry.
